Hair transplantation is a technique that involves extracting hair follicles from a part of the body called the donor site to a bald or part of the body known as the recipient site. Hair transplantation is primarily is used to treat patients suffering from pattern balding or alopecia.
The onset of baldness in both men and women is seen around the age of 30 to 40 years. A strong family history of alopecia is one of the indicators of male pattern baldness. The front and top of the scalp begin thinning over the years in men who have a genetic history of male pattern baldness. Hair growth is restricted by and by eventually resulting in complete hair loss.
WHAT PROCEDURES CAN BE DONE:
With the advanced medical technology these days, many treatments and procedures aid in hair restoration. These techniques are effective and long lasting as well. The most popular surgical treatments are follicular unit extraction (FUE), and follicular unit transplantation (FUT).
Follicular unit grafting is the latest technique which involves a punch tool to extract hair grafts from the donor area. The hair grafts are then simultaneously grafted on the recipient site immediately. This procedure takes 2-3 hours and is usually done under a local anaesthesia. The patient will be instructed for post-surgery care and rest for a day or two, after which the person can get back to work and a normal routine.
The recovery takes a maximum of one week with the results showing up within 3-6 months.
This has already been replaced by better methods than this.here a strip of hair is taken from the back portion of the head. The only problem here is there may be scarring on the back of the head from where the graft was taken.
Apart from FUE and FUT procedures, non-surgical treatments such as protein supplements are also the most affordable ways to gain volume and health for your hair.
Speaking of non-surgicals, newer treatments based on latest research has also been proving very useful in hair restoration. These include:
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
- Stem cell therapy
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) consists of growth factors that improve wound healing. Platelet-rich plasma means blood from the patient itself is drawn and centrifuged, and the plasma (yellow coloured transparent fluid above the blood cells) is used for the procedure. PRP is an emerging trend in hair restoration treatments to improve graft survival, increase hair density and diameter.
Stem Cell Therapy
In stem cell therapy, a portion of the hair follicle and the stem cells of the follicle are placed on the balding area to stimulate hair growth. But the growth can be visualised only after one full cycle of hair growth which is around nine months.
WHY IS THAT THE HAIR IS TAKEN ONLY FROM BACK OF HEAD:
This may be in our head that why is it that the hair in each and every procedure is being taken from behind the head .we always notice that the hair on bald people is lost mainly from the front portion of head along with the sides .but the back portion of hair does not get fallen because it is not affected by hormonal changes.
BODY AND HAIR TRANSPLANTS:
The eyebrows are transplanted for patients who have very thin eyebrows and this has a very good response compared to any other types of transplants. The beard hair can also be transplanted and this is a choice for men who look very young for their age just because of very little growth of facial hair.this may be a very depressing problem for college going students who have very little or no hair on face which are the beard and moustache.
